The study “Basis for assessment the pyrolysis of mixed plastics waste” examined the extent to which selected plastics waste streams – including sorting residues from light packaging collection, commercial waste from construction waste sorting, shredder residues from the processing of end-of-life vehicles and electrical and electronic scrap – that cannot currently be recycled mechanically, can be converted into oils and gases via pyrolysis and thus recycled for material recovery. The investigations have shown that pyrolysis represents a feasible process for various heterogeneous plastics-containing waste streams encountered in practice, enabling the material reuse of the pyrolysis oils and gases. At the same time, the results indicate that there is still a need for technological development with regard to optimising product properties and process integration.
