Study: Potential of plastic recycling from commercial end user waste

The study provides an information and data base on plastic waste from commercial end user waste regarding the types of plastic and products, sources of waste generation and current waste management routes. On this basis, the potential for recycling of these waste streams is shown. The greatest potential lies in the area of construction and demolition waste as well as in mixed commercial waste, totalling 1002 kt, which is currently sent for energy recovery. The study shows that the more homogeneous a waste stream is, i.e. the fewer different applications and material types it contains, the higher the recycling rate. The study presents various approaches for achieving higher material recovery of such waste streams.
