Study: Plastic flow in Germany 2023

Published in 2024. 108 pages. Price 800,- Euro (plus VAT).

Conducted every two years, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the material flow of plastics, offering a complete picture of plastic circularity. It holds significant importance in both public and economic sectors. For the year 2023, a significant increase of 6.2 per cent compared to 2021 in the use of recycled plastics in plastics conversion is determined. Overall, the non-fossil share of plastics produced in 2023 is 18.9 per cent, which represents an increase compared to 16.3 per cent in 2021. While an increase in plastics conversion volumes of 15.4 per cent was observed in the automotive sector compared to 2021, volumes in the packaging sector decreased significantly by around 12.3 per cent and in construction by around 17.3 per cent. The share of recyclate from post-consumer waste rose to 12.0 per cent overall in 2023 compared to 9.1 per cent in 2021. The use of recyclate from post-consumer waste has increased in all application areas, such as construction, the packaging industry, agriculture, horticulture & forestry and automotive.

Of the 5.9 million tonnes of plastic waste collected in 2023, around 2.24 million tonnes were mechanically recycled. Hence, the material recycling volume increased by 14.3 per cent in a two-year comparison.
