Spain: Large-scale polyolefin recycling plant starts operations

The new plant of plastics recycler GCR is to process over 130,000 tons of waste per year.
According to the company, GCR focuses on the processing and recycling of post-consumer and post-industrial polyolefins. The new plant in Castellet i la Gornal, near Barcelona, is reportedly equipped with the latest technology, including Erema recycling lines and Tomra optical sorting systems. The plant is said to have one of the largest hot-washing capacities in Europe, enabling it to produce high-purity recyclates. In addition, GCR operates on-site laboratories for quality control and performance testing, and uses special processes for odor neutralization and batch homogenization, which is said to guarantee consistently high product quality for the use of recyclates in industrial applications. The new plant is said to be designed to supply recyclates to GCR's two product portfolios, Ciclic and Granic. According to GCR, the Ciclic line includes high-quality recycled plastics such as HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and PP. These can reduce CO2 emissions from plastic applications by up to 90 percent, GCR explains. For the company, the opening of the plant marks a decisive step towards a truly circular economy in the plastics sector.
