Plastic Energy produces first batch of pyrolysis oil in Geleen

Chemical recycling plant operated by Plastic Energy and Sabic in Geleen, Netherlands

The plant used for this purpose was built as part of a joint venture with the petrochemical company Sabic.

According to Plastic Energy, the product, marketed under the brand name TACOIL™, is made from post-consumer plastic waste that is difficult to recycle and would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. It is intended to be used as a substitute for conventional naphtha in existing petrochemical plants and enable the manufacture of food packaging, medical plastics and other high-quality products. The brand name is derived from Plastic Energy's patented TAC™ chemical recycling process, which breaks down mixed plastic waste using heat in an oxygen-free environment, according to a statement. When fully operational, the plant is expected to process 20,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. The polymers produced at the plant will significantly increase the market volume of circular polymers, the statement continued.

‘Recycling plastic waste into new plastics is critical to building a circular economy – and that's exactly what this plant does. It increases recycling rates, helps reduce CO2 emissions by diverting used plastic from incineration, and demonstrates what is possible when innovation meets scalability,’ said Plastic Energy CEO Ian Temperton. It will also help to achieve the goal of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which stipulates that all packaging must be fully recyclable by 2030, Temperton added.
