EU Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall confirmed
Following the hearing before the European Parliament (EP) committees, Roswall was confirmed as the new Environment Commissioner.
The Commissioner-designate for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, faced questions from members of the Environment, Industry, Agriculture and Internal Market committees last week. Roswall belongs to the Moderate Party in Sweden and was proposed as a future EU commissioner by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (EPP). During her hearing before the European Parliament's Environment Committee (ENVI), Roswall announced, according to the video recording, that she would be launching a circular economy package as part of the “Clean Industrial Deal” with measures to promote the internal market for waste and recyclates, while ensuring clean, sustainable production in the EU. She also announced a revision of the EU chemicals legislation (REACH), with a new package for the chemical industry to be proposed in 2025. She also wants to address PFAS, including a ban on their use in consumer products. In addition, a new EU strategy for water resilience will be one of her priorities. According to the specialist service Euwid, Wopke Hoekstra, the candidate for Climate Action Commissioner, was also confirmed by the EP after his hearing. According to the European news service Euractiv, the EP's confirmation of Stéphane Séjourné, Commissioner-designate for “Prosperity and Industrial Strategy”, and Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President for Competition Policy and “for a clean, fair and competitive transition”, was postponed from Tuesday this week to Wednesday. The EP vote on the planned new EU Commission as a whole is scheduled to take place during the plenary session in the last week of November.
