ConSensQ consortium launches as successor to CosPaTox
The initiative aims to advance quality management for recycled materials in contact-sensitive packaging applications.
The consortium's official activities are set to begin in September. According to its own statements, it has set itself the goal of addressing the challenges of quality management when using recycled materials from the end consumer sector in applications where material safety is of great importance, such as personal care and hygiene products, cleaning agents and secondary packaging for food. ConSensQ aims to establish a cost-effective approach to ensuring recycled material quality and, according to the information provided, is building on the results of the CosPaTox initiative. CosPaTox stands for cosmetics, packaging and toxicology. The industry consortium has created standardised criteria for post-consumer plastic recyclates (PCR) for cosmetics and other household packaging and completed the certification process in accordance with DIN SPEC 91521 in April 2025.
Organisations and companies from across the plastics, packaging and consumer goods value chain are now invited to join the ConSensQ consortium. The initiative is aimed at companies active in the fields of post-consumer plastics recycling, packaging, quality assurance and product safety, regulatory compliance and sustainability. According to ConSensQ, the initiative is currently being coordinated by a committee entrusted with project management and building on the leadership of its predecessor initiative, CosPaTox. During a preparatory phase lasting several months, eleven stakeholders from across the value chain developed a precise project description for ConSensQ and established a consortium agreement and a budget for 2025, the statement continues. ‘By bringing together players along the entire supply chain – recyclers, material manufacturers, processors and brand owners – we want to enable consistent quality for recycled materials in sensitive applications with significantly less testing than is currently required,’ says Dr Dennis Bankman of Emerging Motif, scientific advisor to the preparatory team. ‘Participation in ConSensQ offers the opportunity to help shape industry practice rather than simply following it,’ adds Dr Michael Scriba, chairman of the preliminary consortium.
