Borealis invests in plant expansion in Bavaria
The strategic investment of €49 million in Burghausen is intended to drive forward the production of recyclable plastics.
This was announced by the Austrian plastics manufacturer, which belongs to the OMV Group, in relation to its investment plans. At its Bavarian site in Burghausen, Borealis plans to expand production of its polypropylene brand Borstar® Nextension, thereby ensuring wider availability of high-performance monomaterial PP solutions, it said. The technology to be used is to make it possible to replace complex, non-recyclable multi-layer structures. This would support packaging design that complies with the Circular Economy Act. Brand owners and converters would thus be able to comply with the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – including the goal of switching to 100 per cent recyclable packaging by 2030. According to Borealis, the process will also enable material and weight savings as well as efficiency gains along the value chain.
“By scaling up Borstar Nextension PP production, we empower our customers to stay ahead in a rapidly changing regulatory and market landscape. It’s another example of our commitment to increase the availability of innovative, recyclable polymer materials suitable for a wide range of applications across multiple industries,” explains Craig Arnold, Borealis EVP Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions and Base Chemicals.
