Audi uses visible components made from recycled materials

In the Q6 e-tron model, visible parts made from recycled materials are to be installed, reports Euwid.

Together with the supplier Kunststofftechnik Wiesmayer and the plastic recyclate manufacturer RSH Polymere, the automotive group has developed the recyclate-based visible parts for the new Audi Q6 e-tron, according to a joint press release. The aim of the project is said to reduce the carbon footprint in the manufacturing process by using recycled materials as a substitute for comparable virgin materials, without compromising on quality. The components contained recycled compounds, around 76 percent of which are produced from production waste from the plastics processing industry. Wiesmayer reportedly manufactures components for Audi such as covers that are used in the visible part of the front end of the car. It is further stated that RSH Polymere, in collaboration with the SKZ Plastics Center, calculates the carbon dioxide emission savings for selected products by substituting virgin material. For example, the recyclate used by RSH Polymere in the air duct of the Audi would have a proven GWP (Global Warming Potential) value of 0.309 kilograms of CO2 equivalents per kilogram of recyclate. By contrast, the production of the comparable new material made of PP MF 20 in this model causes 1.68 kilograms of CO2 equivalents, is said.

Audi has set itself the goal of successively increasing the proportion of recyclates in the coming vehicle generations. The carmaker is focusing on the materials steel, aluminum, plastics, glass and components of the high-voltage batteries of electric vehicles. Together with Wiesmayer and RSH, Audi is also working on bringing recyclates with post-consumer content to series maturity.
