WPC unanimously reelects chairman Benny Mermans

Mermans has been re-elected president of the World Plastics Council (WPC) for a further two years.

As the WPC announces, Benny Mermans, Vice President Sustainability at Chevron Phillips Chemical, will continue to lead the global organisation of plastics industry leaders for another two years. This decision reflected the continued confidence of WPC members in Mermans' leadership skills, the statement said. The WPC, which is working to address global challenges and advance the circular economy for plastics, says it will continue to advocate for responsible policies and promote global cooperation to achieve significant progress in plastic waste reduction and the circular economy. Since taking over the chair in January 2023, Mermans has played a crucial role in strengthening the WPC's position as a mediator between stakeholders along the plastics value chain, governments, NGOs and international bodies. Under his leadership, the WPC is said to have increased its commitment to ambitious and effective solutions. Negotiators for a Global Plastics Agreement were urged to maintain momentum towards an agreement that reduces plastic pollution while recognising the essential role of plastics in society.

Upon his re-election, Mermans expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him, stating: ‘I am honoured to continue as Chair of the World Plastics Council. Through collaboration and innovation, we can overcome the challenges of plastic pollution and climate change while promoting the benefits of plastics. I look forward to leading our collective efforts to shape a more sustainable, circular future.’
