Versalis opens new plastic recycling plant in Italy

Eni's chemicals arm has announced the opening of a new plant for the production of plastics in Porto Marghera.
According to Versalis' press release, the project aims to promote a more circular and environmentally sustainable economy through technological innovation and the recycling of post-consumer plastics. The new plant will reportedly produce up to 20,000 tonnes of crystalline polystyrene (r-GPPS) and expandable polystyrene (r-EPS) annually, made entirely or partially from mechanically recycled raw materials. The secondary raw materials are obtained by recycling EPS waste, Versalis explains. The materials produced in Porto Marghera, which Versalis offers under the Versalis Revive® brand, contain between 35 and 100 per cent recycled post-consumer plastics, it is reported. They are primarily intended for the packaging and construction sectors and are also used for thermal insulation panels for buildings and protective packaging for household appliances. Because of their high quality, safety and performance they would meet the most stringent market requirements. Adriano Alfani, CEO of Versalis, explained: ‘In Porto Marghera, we plan to invest in the expansion of our mechanical plastics recycling platform and to consolidate and improve the logistics hub.’
