Used plastics market in deep crisis

The industry is calling for increased political support to safeguard plastics recycling, reports Euwid.

According to Euwid's market report, prices for regrind and recyclates have already fallen in many areas since June. Recyclers have been in the red for months and have come under increasing pressure due to falling prices for virgin material. According to the report, the weak demand affects the materials PE, PS, PP and PVC. Short-time working, reduced shifts and plant closures at processors and recyclers are said to be increasing and investments are being postponed. Most companies would already see 2024 as a lost year and did not expect an improvement until the middle of next year at the earliest. The industry is expecting far-reaching consolidation and is calling for increased political support. The debt brake in particular is being criticized by entrepreneurs, as it was a massive burden on the important construction industry, one of the main consumers of recyclates.
