Scrap tires to outdoor pants

Vaude and BASF are collaborating on the outdoor sports company's new product line.

Vaude says it plans to launch a new product line from March 2022 that is made of unusual material: The raw material for the polyamides used for the textiles is chemically recycled used tires. BASF supplies the polyamide 6 with the brand name Ultramid® Ccycled™, which can be used to produce such high-quality textiles. In its production Verbund in Ludwigshafen, BASF feeds the pyrolysis oil obtained from used tires, which replaces part of the fossil raw material. In this process, the share of recycled raw material is allocated to specific products manufactured in the Verbund using a certified mass balance approach.
