Pyrolysis oil from used tyres

A cooperation between BASF, Pyrum and Mercedes-Benz is to close a material cycle based on used tyres.

For the joint project, the scrap tyre recycler Pyrum is to supply BASF with pyrolysis oil, which Pyrum produces using its own process. BASF will use the pyrolysis oil in combination with biomethane obtained from agricultural waste as a raw material in the production of a virgin plastic. The plastic is to be certified according to the mass balance procedure, which means that it will be independently confirmed that the required quantities of fossil resources for the end product have been replaced by renewable raw materials and pyrolysis oil from recycled used tyres. Mercedes-Benz plans to use this plastic in the first series-produced models for door handles in 2022, where it will replace fossil raw materials. The S-Class is also to receive a crash absorber made from the recycled plastic.
