Potsdam wants to introduce packaging tax
According to its own statements, the state capital Potsdam has submitted a draft resolution to introduce a packaging tax.
The aim is to improve cleanliness in public spaces and reduce the use of disposable packaging, according to the Potsdam city administration. The draft resolution on a corresponding statute for levying the tax is to be presented to the city council on 4 March. The tax could then be levied from 1 July 2026 on retailers in the ‘to go’ or snack sector who offer food and beverages in disposable packaging. City treasurer Burkhard Exner explains: ‘Of course, the introduction of the packaging tax will initially mean organisational adjustments for many businesses. At the same time, however, it offers the opportunity to rethink packaging concepts and specifically reduce disposable materials.’ The tax creates clear incentives for more reusable packaging and is therefore an important step towards greater cleanliness and sustainability.
According to the information provided, the planned statute applies to disposable packaging for food and beverages that is typically intended for immediate consumption in the city area. A tax rate of 50 cents per unit will apply to disposable packaging such as cups, plates or bowls, and a tax rate of 20 cents per unit will be levied on disposable cutlery.
