PlasticsEurope: Plastic production in Germany in decline

Primary plastic production has fallen by 2.4 per cent compared to the previous quarter.
This was reported by the association of German plastics manufacturers, Plastics Europe Deutschland, with reference to figures from the Federal Statistical Office. According to PlasticsEurope, the reason for the decline is the downturn in industrial production in the European Union and particularly in Germany in the third quarter of 2024, which led to a drop in demand for plastics from customer industries. A rapid recovery in demand is not currently on the horizon, according to the industry association. The industry's turnover fell by 1.3 per cent to 6.7 billion euros. According to PlasticsEurope, foreign trade also declined.
PED CEO Dr Christine Bunte says: ‘In my view, the decline in exports and investments, two pillars of German competitiveness, is particularly worrying.’ She adds that the necessary transformation to a climate-neutral circular economy will be further complicated under these conditions.
