New material flow analysis for Germany

New material flow analysis for Germany

The study for the year 2019 is available and shows: more recyclates and circular economy of plastics.

For years, the plastics material flow chart in Germany has provided a comprehensive picture of the production, processing, consumption, waste generation and recycling of the material. For the second time in succession, the current material flow picture also provides information on the quantities of recycled materials produced and processed. For the year 2019, the analysis has shown an increase in the use of recyclates in new plastic products. Last year 13.7 percent of the plastics processing volume was covered by recycled materials; two years earlier the share was still 12.3 percent. Since the last survey in 2017, the quantity of recycled materials has increased by around five percent per year, which in turn has led to a decline in the quantity of new plastics used. This fell by 2.5 percent over the same period.
The material flow picture overview shows that a good 20 million tons of plastics were produced in Germany last year, including around two million tons of recycled materials. For the manufacture of plastic products, 14 million tons were used, of which 1.9 million tons consisted of recyclates. The amount of plastic waste was around 6.3 million tons, of which 46.4 percent was recycled mechanically, less than one percent raw materially and 52.8 percent energetically.

A free short version (also in English) and a 114-page long version of the results of the study are available at a price of 450.00 Euro (plus VAT). Both can be obtained via the BKV website (see below).

The study prepared by Conversio Market & Strategy GmbH provides an important factual basis for current sustainability discussions and shows the status of the development of closed cycles in the plastics sector. The study was commissioned by BKV GmbH and PlasticsEurope Deutschland e.V., the BDE - Bundesverband der Deutschen Entsorgungs-, Wasser- und Rohstoffwirtschaft e.V., the bvse - Bundesverband Sekundärrohstoffe und Entsorgung e.V., the Fachverband Kunststoff- und Gummimaschinen im VDMA, the IK - Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V., the KRV - Kunststoffrohrverband e.V., the AGPU - Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC und Umwelt e.V., the GKV - Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie e. V. with its supporting associations AVK - Industrievereinigung Verstärkte Kunststoffe e.V., FSK - Fachverband Schaumkunststoffe und Polyurethane e.V., GKV/TecPart - Verband Technische Kunststoff-Produkte e.V. and pro-K - Industrieverband Halbzeuge und Konsumprodukte aus Kunststoff e.V., the IG BCE Industriegewerkschaft Bergbau, Chemie, Energie as well as the VCI - Verband der Chemischen Industrie
