New life cycle assessment on beverage packaging

A UBA research project aims at the "Life Cycle Assessment Analysis of Optimization Potentials."

As reported by Euwid Recycling und Entsorgung, the German Federal Environment Agency has issued a call for tenders for the research project "Life Cycle Assessment of Optimization Potentials for Beverage Packaging." The demand for a new life cycle assessment would have been voiced by parts of the industry for quite some time. The Federal Environment Ministry is said to have set aside around 400,000 euros for this purpose.

According to Euwid, from the project description arised that although reusable containers would be at the top of the waste management hierarchy, recent findings indicate that certain disposable containers would have significantly improved their eco-balance. The study is intended to provide a scientifically sound basis for further political frameworks. It would be less about the status quo and more about the prospects and optimization potential of various packaging systems. According to Euwid, the comprehensive project is to run for at least two years and the contract will be awarded before the end of May.
