Largest U.S. waste disposal company expands plastics recycling

Waste Management is taking a stake in a recycling company that recycles stretch film and other materials.

The largest waste management company in the U.S. announced the purchase of a majority stake in Avangard Innovative's U.S. business this week, according to Euwid. Waste Management said it plans to use its stake in the newly formed company to open up new recycling opportunities for its customers and provide closed-loop solutions for films and transparent plastic packaging. This includes plastic stretch films for pallets, furniture films and food bags, among others, it said. The company will operate under the name Natura PCR and aims to increase its recycling production to around 181,000 tons per year over the next five years, Euwid reports. The focus is to be on mechanical recycling of films and flexible plastics. "These streams account for nearly a quarter of today's plastic production, but only about five percent is recycled today," Waste Management explained.
