Fraunhofer CCPE presents a design set for monomaterial products

Three different light-coloured materials with different structures and surfaces

The ‘monomaterial design set’ aims to reduce the variety of plastics used in durable products and offer circular solutions for designers and product developers.

The novel approach is intended to make it possible to dispense with the combination of different plastics in numerous applications, thereby increasing recyclability without compromising the performance of the end product, according to the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy (CCPE). The central goal is said to be 100% recyclability of the products, as only one type of plastic is used. By eliminating adhesives, the disassembly of components also becomes unnecessary. In addition, the Fraunhofer CCPE offers solutions for recyclable colour pigments and flame retardant additives. In addition, depending on the material base selected and the regional recycling infrastructure, companies can obtain advice on how to make optimal use of existing collection systems or recycling facilities. According to Fraunhofer CCPE, the ‘monomaterial design set’ is aimed at designers and product developers who want to make sophisticated products more circular. Based on Fraunhofer CCPE's research, the same thermoplastic can be incorporated into a product in various forms, such as fibre, foam and casting compound. According to the information provided, the thermoplastics polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polylactide (PLA) and polyamide (PA) have already been tested. The modular structure is also said to allow different manufacturing technologies to be combined. The processes used include injection moulding, foam production and textile processing. The concept is said to be suitable for a variety of industries – from furniture and packaging to technical components – and can be applied to various product segments.

As part of the ‘Re:think Design Competition’ organised by furniture manufacturer Nowy Styl DACH, Fraunhofer CCPE is supporting the development of fully recyclable soft seating furniture. Participating designers can use the monomaterial design set as a technical basis. According to Fraunhofer CCPE, submissions for the design competition are open until 3 December 2025, with the award ceremony scheduled to take place in April 2026.
