Flexible packaging convenient for circularity

Werner & Mertz and Mondi received the "Cradle to Cradle Certified" certification for their recyclable stand-up pouch.

The cleaning products company and packaging manufacturer's stand-up pouch, which is made entirely of polypropylene, has achieved a Gold rating in all categories of the "Cradle to Cradle" Certified product scorecard - the first flexible packaging worldwide, Werner & Mertz and Mondi point out. They were supported in the development of the packaging by all stakeholders in the value chain as well as by EPEA Switzerland, which has advised them as an accredited assessor for "Cradle to Cradle Certified" and developed an 18-point "Cradle to Cradle" reference model to fulfill the corresponding principle of product development "from cradle to cradle". In view of the fact that 51 percent of all packaging that ends up in the yellow bag were film packaging, there is enormous potential to be exploited here, according to Immo Sander, Head of Packaging Development at Werner & Mertz. However, he said, the more than five years of development work for the bag also shows that products that are ultimately to be recyclable require time, investment, innovation and close cooperation with all partners along the value chain.
