End-of-life vehicle recycling: Toyota launches “Circular Factory” in Europe

The automotive group's first “Circular Factory” is designed to recycle 10,000 end-of-life vehicles per year.
According to a statement from Toyota Motor Europe (TME), the Toyota Circular Factory (TCF) was established to carefully and systematically process vehicles at the end of their useful life, maximizing the environmental benefits of recycling, reuse and remanufacture. TCF activities are said to fall into three main areas: reusable parts, serviceable items that can be refurbished, and materials that can be recycled. The first operation at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK's (TMUK) Burnaston plant is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025 and will become the center of excellence for future recycling operations across Europe and worldwide. The UK plant is expected to recycle around 10,000 vehicles a year, refurbish 120,000 parts for reuse, and recover 300 tons of plastic and 8,200 tons of steel, among other things. In addition, the group plans to introduce similar processes throughout Europe. The Circular Factory Initiative at the Burnaston site will be implemented alongside the production of Toyota Corolla vehicles there. With the Circular Factories, Toyota aims to significantly reduce the future environmental impact associated with the manufacture of vehicles and subcomponents. TME has set itself the goal of being completely CO2 neutral by 2040. By 2035, Toyota plans to reduce CO2 emissions from its entire European product range by 100 percent.
