Edeka publishes guidelines for circular economy

Circle of green leaves, orange slices and blue particles, next to text “CIRCULAR ECONOMY GUIDELINE” and logos of EDEKA and Netto Marken-Discount.

The group is the first food retailer in Germany to present guidelines for a circular economy.

According to a statement by the Edeka Group, the new guidelines focus on a systemic approach “that integrates biological cycles, economic processes, and raw material use.” Edeka's aim is to go beyond the focus on packaging and recycling issues and combine product innovations with new building concepts and product range development with the long-term conservation of resources. At the Expo Real real estate trade fair, for example, Edeka will present innovative construction projects based on the “cradle to cradle” principle, including a Netto store in Dortmund made of modular wooden elements that can be completely reused. With the cradle-to-cradle approach, Edeka wants to ensure that materials are designed for recycling and, following nature's example, that waste is turned into reusable raw materials. According to the information provided, the contents of the new guideline, which is to be gradually implemented in practice over the coming months and years, cover the three overarching areas of action: “Products & Packaging,” “Markets & Buildings,” and “Business Processes & Infrastructure.” According to Edeka, this also includes pilot projects, reusable and recycling solutions, and close cooperation with partners along the supply chain.
