According to the IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, the "Eco Design Management Guide for Plastic Packaging", which was presented for the first time in Berlin on 12 June, has been designed as a practice-oriented tool and, as such, is intended to help companies find the right Eco Design strategy and integrate it into packaging development. At www.ecodesign-packaging.org the "Tool for a 360 degree check of packaging solutions" can be used free of charge.
The guideline Eco Design of plastic packaging is an effective and holistic tool, which is urgently expected by its users, evaluates IK managing director Dr. Isabell Schmidt the present result. It was developed by the "Eco Design Round Table for Plastic Packaging" with participants along the entire value chain and is intended to become the future standard repertoire for packaging development. The developers emphasize that Eco Design is more than Design for Recycling. The requirements for a design suitable for recycling should be harmonized and balanced with other important environmental aspects and core functions of the packaging. "While a number of guidelines and tools have already been developed for "Design for Recycling" in recent years, this guide focuses on conveying a comprehensive understanding of Eco Design. At the same time, the existing tools are available in bundled form for the first time," says Dr. Schmidt, summarising the outstanding position of the guide.
