Covestro uses mass-balanced raw materials in production

The plastics manufacturer sources raw materials derived from waste and residual materials for the production of polycarbonate.

Plastics manufacturer Covestro (Leverkusen, Germany) and Japan's Mitsui Chemicals (Tokyo) said they have signed an agreement to supply the raw materials phenol and acetone from ISCC Plus-certified mass-balanced sources. The raw materials will be used for polycarbonate production at two Covestro sites in Asia. In mass balancing, bio-based raw materials are used at an early stage of production and mathematically assigned to finished products. To produce its bio-attributed products phenol and acetone, Mitsui Chemicals says it uses bio-raw materials from waste and residues as a feedstock. "We are pursuing not only the recycling of plastics, but also the conversion to biomass with the aim of realizing a circular economy," says Yoshino Tadashi, senior managing executive director and president of Mitsui Chemicals' Basic Materials Business Sector.
