Covestro and BYD agree strategic partnership
Covestro and the Chinese technology group BYD intend to jointly develop and implement circular economy solutions for future-oriented industries.
As part of the collaboration, the materials manufacturer Covestro will work with BYD across the entire value chain in future, the company announced. According to the statement, plans include joint research and development projects, the co-development of new technologies and strategic investment initiatives. Furthermore, the two companies aim to develop circular material solutions designed to reduce the environmental footprint of future mobility, energy and smart systems.
The collaboration is primarily aimed at the next generation of electric vehicles. Covestro intends to provide dedicated research and development resources for the joint development of new material technologies. According to the announcement, the focus is on high-performance polymer solutions for key components: for example, material solutions are to be developed for lighting systems, exterior and interior components, and smart electronic components. Covestro is to contribute its extensive materials expertise in the field of polycarbonate and polyurethane solutions, which is based on decades of experience in the automotive and electronics sectors and complements BYD’s core areas of application. According to Covestro, another key focus of the collaboration is so-called Circular Intelligence (CQ) materials, which are reported to consist of at least 25 per cent alternative raw materials.
