Cosmetic bottles made of "ocean plastic"

The British cosmetics company Lush is switching successively to bottles made of certified recycled "Prevented Ocean Plastic". The company has, it says, been using 100% recycled PET for its transparent bottles for more than a decade. In April 2024, Lush announced that it would use "Prevented Ocean Plastic" for bottles with a size of 100, 250 and 500 ml. The bottles are produced in the UK as well as in Germany and Croatia.

The production sites in Germany and Croatia have, according to Lush, also introduced Prevented Ocean Plastic for the previously mentioned bottle sizes. Other countries are to follow. The changeover at the sites is taking place in each case in cooperation with the local bottle manufacturers. The plastic used for the production of the new transparent Lush bottles is, according to the cosmetic manufacturer, collected in a radius of 50 kilometres around the sea coast or larger waterways in Indonesia. Since Lush switched to Prevented Ocean Plastic, more than three million plastic bottles are said to have been collected on the Indonesian coast and recycled into Lush bottles. Regarding the use of the Ocean Plastic, Lush explained: "Local collectors gather the plastic waste and bring it to collection points, after which it is taken, via recycling partners, to packaging manufacturers. They pass on the material to Lush and other retailers for use. "The switch to Prevented Ocean Plastic, with which the further pollution of the seas is being tackled, shows just how much Lush is committed to closing the cycle of packaging waste and finding solutions for the reuse, recycling and reprocessing of materials in the whole company.
