Plastic recyclates for packaging

A new BKV study clarifies the potential of recyclates for their use in plastic packaging.

"Potential for the use of recycled plastics in the production of plastic packaging in Germany" - this is the title of the new study which GVM Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung has prepared on behalf of the BKV. The study is based on current plans and legal initiatives at both European and national level, which are intended to significantly increase the proportion of recycled plastics in plastic products. About 30 percent of the plastic processed in Germany is used in packaging.

Against this background, the study deals with the market situation of plastic recyclates. To this end, the current supply and application potential of plastic recyclates for packaging was calculated. For this purpose, general requirements on the quality of the recyclates were needed, for the definition of which the authors used the results of a survey conducted among plastics processors. From this, the authors developed a grid of different variants, ranging from "moderate restrictions" to "not possible". In addition to the analysis, the study identifies bottleneck factors for the use of recyclates in packaging and gives recommendations for action to overcome these hurdles for all actors involved.

The 103-page study in German language can be ordered at www.bkv-gmbh.de/studien at a price of 500 euros (plus VAT). There you can also download a short version of the study in English language free of charge.
