Forum PET for a neutral ecological balance sheet

According to Forum PET, the Umweltbundesamt (Federal Environment Agency) should carry out a neutral life cycle assessment in the beverage sector.

In the Forum PET in the IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V. (IK), the manufacturers of disposable and returnable PET drinks bottles are represented. In order to finally do away with old prejudices against beverage bottles, Forum PET calls on the Federal Government to have a neutral life cycle assessment drawn up. In the opinion of Forum PET this should be done by the Umweltbundesamt (UBA). The federal budget would provide 400,000 euros for this purpose.

The discussion about one-way or reusable is still characterized by prejudices based on outdated data from ten years ago. On this basis, the reusable proponents would still demand a reusable quota of 70 percent. Forum PET accuses the reusable lobbyof a refusal attitude because it would have already announced that it will not recognise the results of a new life cycle assessment, even if it is carried out by UBA. Because reusable containers would have such a good reputation, their eco-balance would no longer be questioned.

"The fair comparison is apparently feared. It seems clear to all sides that a new life cycle assessment would bring to light facts that the advocates of the reusable quota would not like", said IK managing director Isabell Schmidt (photo).
