Recycling management and the automotive industry

At the VDI event "PIAE", experts discussed the challenges of recycling in the automotive industry.

The world's largest congress on the subject of plastics in automobiles, the "PIAE" (Plastics in Automotive Engineering) of the VDI Wissensforum, was first held digitally this year due to Covid-19. On July 28 and 29, 2020, participants were able to follow lectures, ask questions and participate in discussions as usual - this time digitally. The organizer provided the technology for an interactive event and offered chat rooms.
On 27 July 2020, a panel discussion on recycling management and the automotive industry was on the agenda. One of the participants was Dr. Frank Buckel from Covestro Deutschland GmbH, who has been spokesman of the Technical Committee of the BKV since 2016. In the opening statements of the panel, he provided an overview of the status of the recycling economy in Germany in general as well as specifically related to the automotive sector. He used the results of BKV studies, in particular the material flow analysis for plastics in Germany 2017, for this purpose. Other participants in the round table, which was moderated by Manfred Rink, were Jochen Hardt, Head of Global Marketing Mobility at Covestro, Prof. Achim Schmiemann, Head of the Institute for Recycling at Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, Hartmut Häberle, Technical Consultant for Plastics Applications at MAN Truck & Bus AG. The discussion made very clear the complexity and challenges of a conversion from a linear economy to a recycling economy in the automotive industry.
