ZSVR: Recycling up, exports down

The recovery of plastic packaging from the yellow bag increased in 2021, according to data from the Central Office, while exports decreased.

A total of around 5.9 million tons of packaging from private final consumption was recycled by the dual systems across all material fractions in 2021 - around three percent more than in the previous year. According to the figures published by the Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (ZSVR), the dual systems thus met all of the legally prescribed recovery and recycling quotas for 2021. According to the data, 65.5 percent of plastic packaging from the dual system was recycled. The recycling rate for plastic packaging is thus seven percentage points above what is required by law. At 76.2 percent and 69.6 percent, the statutory recycling rates were also exceeded for beverage cartons and other packaging made of composite materials.
Exports of plastic packaging fell in 2021, according to the ZSVR: Just under 83 percent was recycled domestically, according to the report, and 17 percent was exported, mostly to countries within the EU. In 2020, the percentage of exported plastic packaging was still 19.4 percent, the ZSVR said.
